The EU Question

Met up with an ex-coworker for lunch today and we chatted about my recent travel adventures. Coming from Ukraine, he was delighted to hear about my visit to Croatia in March. He told me that his mother just came back from Montenegro for a visit.

“Oh, is she also investing there?” I still remember that our guide told us that one of Russians’ current favorite investment destinations being Montenegro.

“No.” He chuckled. “She’s not that rich, rather, she will be happy to check out any Russian investments there.”

Then casually he asked me, “are they EU?”

“Ah,” I answered proudly, “Montenegro, yes; Croatia, not yet.”

“Oh,OK.” He nodded.

Then it darns to me we just chatted like Europeans and I am so very much proud of myself!

“Yes,” he remarks with a smirk. “Most Americans don’t even know what EU is.”

My friend, this is why I love travelling.

2009 Croatia & Slovenia: Food & Wine

Each region in Croatia has their own distinct characters of food and wine, which depend from their geology features as well as its historical colonial influences.

Eating out at Croatia is a different experience starting from ordering. On the menu, every item is broken down from appertizers to main entrees to sides, and each item has their price. So if you want a main entree of a steak, you’ll get just a piece of meat, and if you’d like some side dishes to accompany the meat, you’ll have to order from the side dish section of the menu. As a result, the bill can add up quite significantly. Cover charge is also applied on each bill.

2009 Croatia & Slovenia: Hotels

Besides enjoying the hotels, I made one confirmation in this trip. For Gate 1 tour customers, you never have to worry about packing your own hair dryer. A huge relief for us light packers with uncontrollable hair.

I am quite content with the hotel selections the tour company provided given the budget of the tour. For the trip, we had 1 night in four star hotel, one night in a five star hotel and the rest are all 3 stars but some still provide pool services and fulfilling breakfast selections. I cannot comment on the comfort of beddings or furniture styles as everyone has their own standards, but it’s survice to say that I had a good trip with Gate 1.
