2005 Tibet: Mt. Everest
May, 2005
After another day’s full day travel, Day 8 in Tibet, we dedicated it to Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world.
Before sunrise, we entered the Dingri Omolangma National Nature Preservation Area. These 4 peaks all are above 8000 meters tall.
The area was desserted and dusty. Donkey rides are available to ride up to the world’s tallest temple. From there, we had to walk to the base camp.
Judging from the environment, it was not exactly the dream world with mountain and water that a climber would want to conquer for leisure, and yet, this is no ordinary climb.
It took us an hour on the donkey carriage to reach the temple.
Our guide.
The temple at the foot of the mountain is called Rongbu. It is famous because of its special location as well as the fact that the creator of Tibetan Buddhism and his students were the first lamas studied here.
There wasn’t much to see at the temple, so we rushed to the base camp.
Here we are! The base camp! With Mt. Everest at the back!
Can you imagine how proud I was?
On the base camp, we saw the Chinese scientist team.
I met an English climber. Guess what? They even have post office on the base camp. So I mailed myself a post card with the Mt. Everest stamp chop on it.
Yeah yeah yeah! I felt good in here, despite the rural rough conditions and the short of breath from the lack of oxygen.
Day 8, I checked off a big item on my travel list. It is quite an experience, tough and yet tolerable, exciting and curious. It’s a life time memory.
